Tucked away on the ground floor of an old building on Rue du Parc in Montreal, Chillax is one of those hidden gems only the most curious manage to find. This tiny Japanese restaurant, with the feel of a secret hideout, offers an intimate and truly transportive dining experience.

A discreet, almost clandestine atmosphere

Chillax doesn’t catch the eye at first glance. A few soft lights gently illuminate the exterior. But its discreet entrance, a handful of well-spaced tables, and a hushed, cozy atmosphere make it a place where you instantly feel transported, like stepping into a hidden izakaya tucked away in a quiet Tokyo alley. Here, everything seems designed to let the flavors shine, to spark curiosity, and to invite you to slow down and savor the moment.

Original and uncompromising Japanese cuisine

The menu, concise yet expertly crafted, showcases genuine authenticity, featuring classics such as takoyaki and udon dishes. During my visit, two dishes stood out as absolute must-tries in my eyes.

chillax - gyoza

Homemade Gyoza: A Crispy Surprise

These homemade gyoza are unlike any other. Perfectly seared, they’re topped with a delicate sheet of crispy cheese that adds a unique and delicious texture. The balance between the tender filling and the crunch of the cheese creates a bold, unforgettable bite.

Katsudon: A One-Way Ticket to Japan

The katsudon, an iconic dish of Japanese cuisine, is elevated to perfection here. The breaded tonkatsu-style pork is tender, the coating crispy, and the slightly sweet sauce perfectly captures the typical flavors of cozy neighborhood Japanese eateries. Every bite briefly transported me back to my trip to Japan.

Excellent value at Chillax

What stands out at Chillax, beyond the quality of the food, is the consistency of the prices. For dishes so well-executed, made with fresh ingredients and a touch of originality, the prices remain very affordable. This is a rare find in Montreal, especially in such an intimate setting. The student neighborhood likely helps keep these prices accessible.
