Tucked away in the heart of a quiet residential neighborhood, yet just steps from the vibrant Jean-Talon Market, Casavant reveals itself like a well-kept secret. You walk in almost by accident, and walk out convinced you’ve discovered one of Montreal’s most charming wine bars.

The room is small, loud, and dimly lit, filled with the lively buzz of a true wine bar: rows of high tables, a completely open kitchen, bar tiles, and mosaic floors that evoke a gourmet workshop. Guests come as much for a thoughtfully chosen bottle as they do for the irresistible small plates.

To start, I let myself be tempted by ultra-fresh scallops, almost translucent, bathed in a fragrant herb oil. Small touches of goat cheese add subtle roundness, while grated chorizo on top brings an unexpected crunch and a gentle spicy depth.
To crown the dish, delicate fish roe intensifies the briny note with an elegance that immediately calls for the next bite.

Next comes a leek, goat cheese, and hazelnut tartlet. A layer of melting leek rests on a warm pastry base, topped with a light goat cheese emulsion, crunchy hazelnuts, fried onions, and even a few raisins that offer an unexpected sweet touch.
The dish clearly leans into earthy comfort, though a hint more acidity could have turned it into a real showstopper.

To finish, I give in to the braised lamb pappardelle. The house-made pasta, long and silky, is cooked al dente with a subtle lemon note that brightens the whole dish. The braised lamb, tender and fall-apart soft, blends beautifully into a rich, perfectly balanced sauce.
Thin slices of zucchini, slightly overcooked to deliver an almost crispy texture, add a surprising twist that works wonderfully.
The dressing is simple, without fuss… but the flavor lingers long after the last bite.
